How it actually works
Upload one square-ish image and tick the sizes you need: 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 come pre-selected, with 64, 128 and 256 available. Each chosen size gets its own canvas, into which the decoded source is drawn with optional padding from 0 to 50 percent so the mark does not touch the edge, and the canvas is exported as a PNG.
The tool also assembles an ICO container, the legacy Windows format that embeds several resolutions inside a single file, and bundles everything with JSZip into one download so you can drop the whole pack straight onto a server.
What that means for your results
Favicons live at brutal sizes. At 16x16 you have 256 pixels for the entire design, which means thin strokes, small serifs and tight detail collapse into grey mush. The designs that survive are a single strong shape at high contrast, ideally one or two flat colours.
The padding slider is often the difference between readable and muddy: giving the mark a few percent of breathing room at 16px preserves the silhouette. And test before shipping, because a favicon that looks great at 256 is frequently invisible at 16.
PNG output is lossless, so colour accuracy is preserved exactly.
Where it falls short — honestly
Non-square sources get fitted into square canvases, which introduces letterboxing or squashing depending on the original ratio; crop to a square in Image Cropper first for a predictable result. Very detailed photography simply cannot work at 16px no matter what the tool does.
A favicon alone is not enough for modern progressive web apps: manifest icons and Apple touch icons want specific sizes, so check your manifest expects the files you generate. Files above 10MB are refused.
A real end-to-end workflow
