How it actually works
Once an image loads, it is drawn to a canvas at its natural resolution and a crop rectangle is laid over the preview. Drag the box or its edges to frame the composition; the rectangle has a 50 pixel minimum on screen so you cannot accidentally request a postage stamp. What you see is a scaled preview, not the true output size.
On export the tool multiplies the on-screen rectangle by the ratio between the displayed preview and the real image, creates a canvas of that exact pixel size and paints only the selected region into it. That is why a crop taken from a 12MP photo still comes out at full native resolution rather than at the size of the preview you dragged.
The saved file keeps the format of the image you uploaded, so a PNG stays a PNG with its transparency and a JPG stays a JPG.
What that means for your results
Cropping never degrades an image, because no resampling happens: pixels are kept or discarded, not re-created. You lose the area outside the box and gain everything else at exactly the quality you shot.
The practical consequence is about resolution rather than fidelity. Aggressive crops from a small source leave you with few pixels, and the moment you display that crop larger than its native size, softness appears. Crop on the biggest file you have, and if a crop ends up smaller than the space it must fill, take it through Image Upscaler to pick an interpolation that suits the subject.
Where it falls short — honestly
There are no fixed aspect-ratio presets here. If you need an exact 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9 frame for a specific platform, type the target dimensions after cropping, or crop loose and set the precise numbers in Image Resizer.
Cropping also changes composition geometry only. It cannot remove a background, straighten a tilted horizon or rotate the image; for background work use Background Remover. Very large files above 10MB are rejected, and as with any canvas tool, EXIF metadata does not survive the export.
A real end-to-end workflow
The standard headshot pipeline: crop tight around the face with enough head room, resize the result to the exact pixel requirement of the platform, then compress. For a photo that must fit inside a circle when displayed, keep the square crop here and let the platform apply the mask, rather than trying to cut a circle.
