How it actually works
SheetJS 0.20.2 reads the workbook - a ZIP of XML parts for .xlsx, a binary BIFF record walk for .xls - and with cell dates enabled a date cell comes back as a real JavaScript date instead of the serial number Excel keeps underneath it. The sheet you pick in the selector is flattened with sheet_to_json into rows of values, which is what both the preview and the PDF draw from.
The PDF is written by jsPDF 2.5.1 as genuine vector text rather than a screenshot. Column widths are derived from the longest value in each column within a bounded range and then rescaled to the printable width; any cell that no longer fits is wrapped with splitTextToSize inside its own column, and the row grows to the number of lines it needed. The tinted header band is redrawn at the top of every new page, alternate rows are shaded, and a footer names the file, the sheet and the page number.
What that means for your results
Because the glyphs are drawn as text, the output stays selectable, searchable and sharp at any zoom - the property that spreadsheet-to-image conversions lose. A hundred-row sheet paginates properly since breaks follow real content height rather than a fixed row pitch, and the repeated header means a stapled printout is still readable on page four.
You are getting a legible report, not a copy of your workbook. The typography belongs to the tool - a 16pt title, 10pt headers, 9pt data - and cell colours, fonts and number formats are not carried across, so a currency column prints as 1250 rather than formatted, and a date prints as ISO text instead of the display style you set in Excel.
Where it falls short — honestly
Anything arranged around the grid disappears: merged cells, charts, pivot tables, embedded images, comments, conditional formatting and the formulas themselves fall away, because the tool reads computed values rather than the objects layered over them. Numbers, dates and strings survive intact.
Every column has to fit one printable width, so genuinely wide sheets get squeezed - past roughly fifteen or twenty columns the wrapping takes over and lines break awkwardly. Choose landscape, pick a single sheet from the selector, or trim the sheet before converting. Files above 10MB are refused, and the preview deliberately shows only the first ten rows.
A real end-to-end workflow
A weekly sales sheet that must reach people who will not open Excel: load the workbook, choose the sheet, set A4 landscape so the columns can breathe, convert, and the PDF carries exactly the values the preview showed with a page footer you can file.
If you only need part of a long sheet, filter it down before converting or take the summary page afterwards with PDF Split.
