How it actually works
A .docx is a ZIP of XML parts, so the first job is understanding it. Mammoth 1.4.2 opens the document, walks the body element and maps a documented subset of Word processing to semantic HTML: headings to h1 through h6, bold and italic to strong and em, lists to ul and ol, tables to table markup, embedded images resolved to inline data URIs.
That HTML is placed in a container styled Times New Roman at 14 pixels with a line height of 1.5, and html2pdf.js 0.10.1 renders the container through html2canvas at scale 2 and writes it into a jsPDF document as JPEG at quality 0.98, A4 portrait with half-inch margins. The result is a Blob you can open in a new tab to check before downloading, named after your source file.
What that means for your results
The 2x rasterisation is why text looks acceptably sharp rather than visibly soft: at that scale an A4 page is about 1190 by 1684 pixels. Because the file is assembled as an image, it is also perfectly faithful to the preview - nothing reflows or disappears between your screen and the PDF.
That faithfulness has a price in weight and behaviour. A dozen pages of text come out several times larger than the same document exported from Word, and every page is a photograph of a page: the text cannot be selected, copied, searched by Ctrl-F, or read aloud by a screen reader.
Where it falls short — honestly
Mammoth covers a documented subset, so the parts of Word that carry layout rather than meaning are dropped: headers and footers, page numbers, footnotes, table-of-contents and other fields, text boxes, floating images and shapes, tracked changes, and complex custom styles. Content is re-flowed into the tool's own typography, so your fonts, sizes, spacing and page breaks are not preserved - page seven in Word can be page eight here.
Only .docx is accepted; a legacy .doc is refused with a message telling you to save it as .docx first, because no usable browser parser exists for that binary format. Page size and margins are fixed, so if you need Legal paper, landscape or exact pagination, export from Word itself.
A real end-to-end workflow
