How it actually works
WebP is Google's format built on the VP8 video codec: prediction-based block coding plus optional lossless mode, which in practice compresses about 25 to 35% better than a JPEG of comparable visual quality. This tool decodes each JPG, paints it to a canvas and re-encodes it as WebP with your quality value, from 0.1 to 1, defaulting to 0.8.

What that means for your results

Two caveats. WebP encoding from canvas is a browser feature, and older Safari builds and some in-app browsers never implemented it, so test on the browser you actually use. And conversion is generation loss: your JPEG is decoded and re-compressed, so do this once from the best source rather than repeatedly re-saving.
Where it falls short - honestly
WebP is a delivery format, not an editing one. Layers, 16-bit depth and most professional workflows still belong in PNG or a native editor file, and anything with transparency should come from PNG to WebP instead, which carries alpha through.
If your audience includes very old browsers, keep a JPEG fallback in the markup, and remember that a WebP converted from an already-poor JPEG inherits every artefact in the source.
A real end-to-end workflow
