About the Dummy Image Generator Tool

Fast-track your web design and development with the ToolFlic Dummy Image Generator. Instantly create placeholder images of any size, color, and format to use in your mockups and prototypes. No more searching for the right stock photo; just define your dimensions and get a clean, professional placeholder in milliseconds.

Core Advantages

Accelerate your UI/UX workflow. Placeholders help you visualize layouts and test responsive designs without getting distracted by actual content. You can customize background colors and text to match your project's theme, making your prototypes look cohesive and well-structured.

Architecture & Security

Our generator is 100% dynamic, utilizing client-side Canvas drawing to render images on-demand. Because there is no external server involved, you can generate thousands of unique placeholders without any network latency or cross-origin issues.

Under the Hood: the Dummy Image Generator explained properly

No marketing filler — just the mechanics, the trade-offs and the real limits, explained clearly.

How it actually works

Two jobs in one tool. In generate mode you set a width and height from 10 to 3000 pixels, or use a preset such as HD 1920x1080, 720p, SVGA 800x600, VGA 640x480, Small 400x300 or Square 150x150, pick a background colour, a text colour and a caption, and the canvas is filled and drawn with your label at a size between 10 and 200 pixels.

In edit mode you upload an existing JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP up to 10MB, and the same canvas pipeline resizes it and stamps text over it. Output is produced from canvas pixels, so the file is a clean raster with no hidden metadata.

This is how you get deterministic placeholders: identical inputs give identical images.

What that means for your results

Placeholder images exist to expose layout truth: where a line wraps, how tall a card grows, whether a grid breaks at 320 pixels. Using a real-size dummy rather than a stretchy service image tells you the honest answer, which is why matching the exact pixel dimensions matters more than the picture content.

Text contrast is the other decision. A mid-grey label on a white canvas is unreadable in a screenshot you share with a client, so keep the caption high-contrast, and set the text size to roughly one tenth of the image height so it scales sensibly.

Where it falls short — honestly

Images above 3000 pixels on a side are refused, and the practical ceiling is lower on phones where large canvases can fail to allocate. This tool does not fetch photos, embed textures or generate patterns; it produces a flat colour plus text, which is exactly what a wireframe needs and not what a hero banner needs.

Text is centred single-line stamping rather than a full layout engine, so long captions can overflow the frame. Keep the label short or put the wording in the page instead.

A real end-to-end workflow

Build a set of matched sizes for a responsive test, for example 320x200, 768x480 and 1440x900 with the dimensions as the caption, then drop them straight into the markup to see which breakpoint misbehaves.

For a mock-up that needs a real photo behind the layout, edit an existing image in this tool, crop it to ratio in Image Cropper and compress the export with Image Compressor so your test page loads fast.
