About this tool

About the PNG to JPG

What it does, who it is for, and how the thing is built.

Convert large, uncompressed PNG files into smaller, web-optimized JPEGs. The ToolFlic PNG to JPG converter cuts file weight while you control the quality setting to keep edges, text and skin tones as clean as possible, detailed images can still show some JPEG artifacts, so preview before saving. It suits photographers and webmasters who want faster-loading images while keeping the look of high-resolution photos. Built-in extras include a Transparency Matte colour picker, choose the fill colour behind transparent PNG pixels instead of defaulting to white, preventing black squares on dark-themed pages.

Core advantages

Achieve file size reductions of up to 80% compared to original PNGs. A quality slider lets you trade file size against artefacts until the result looks right at the size you need. It automatically handles the conversion of transparent areas to a solid background, usually white, for maximum compatibility with all platforms.

Architecture & security

Each PNG is decoded, drawn onto a canvas that has been pre-filled with your matte colour, and encoded by the browser's own JPEG encoder through canvas.toBlob at the quality value you set. The encoder decides chroma subsampling and quantisation itself, so quality is the only lever here. Everything runs on your device.

Under the hood

How the PNG to JPG actually works

No marketing filler: the mechanics, the trade-offs and the real limits, explained clearly.

How it actually works

Upload up to 20 PNGs. Each is decoded, drawn onto a canvas and re-encoded as JPEG at the quality you set, with the range running from 0.1 to 1 and a default of 0.85. This is a genuine format change. The lossless deflate stream is thrown away and the pixels are rebuilt as quantised DCT blocks, which is what makes the file dramatically smaller.

Optional resize fields let you change dimensions during the same conversion, and a ZIP export bundles the batch. The compression gain comes from removing data the eye tolerates poorly, so the size drop is usually 60 to 90% on photographic content. Built-in extras. A transparency matte, convert-all batch and a ZIP download.

What that means for your results

PNG to JPEG is the single biggest file-size win available on most websites, and the trade-off is straightforward. Flat colours, hard text edges and UI screenshots look worse at a given quality than a photograph does, because those sharp transitions are exactly what the encoder struggles to describe cheaply.

Transparency is the other thing to respect. JPEG has no alpha channel, so the canvas is filled with the matte colour before the image is drawn and transparent regions take that colour instead. The matte defaults to white and the colour picker sits in the Built-in extras panel, which is why a cut-out logo does not arrive with a black box behind it.

Where it falls short, honestly

Do not use this on files you will edit again. Once the pixels are quantised the original data is gone, and re-saving a JPEG repeatedly degrades it further. Keep PNG, or better yet WebP from PNG to WebP, as your master copy.

Images with fewer than about 256 colours, badges and simple icons, can convert to a JPEG that looks visibly banded while not saving much. WebP handles those cases more gracefully at a smaller size.

A real end-to-end workflow

A photo gallery pipeline. Shoot or scan as PNG, convert here at 85% for delivery, and if the file is still too heavy run it through Image Compressor at the same setting rather than lowering quality twice.

For a website, convert the photographic PNGs here but keep logos as alpha-capable files, ideally WebP Converter output, so the header does not arrive with a black box around it.
