About the Xml Formatter Tool
Bring order to your XML documents with the ToolFlic XML Formatter. XML can quickly become unmanageable due to its verbose tag-based structure. Our tool automatically indents your tags, aligns attributes, and formats content to create a clear, professional visual hierarchy. It is optimized for SOAP responses, RSS feeds, and legacy configuration files.
Core Advantages
Instantly spot unclosed tags or mismatched attributes in large documents. Proper formatting makes it easier to understand the relationships between parent and child elements, accelerating development and debugging. Our tool also includes a "minify" option to strip whitespace for production environments.
Architecture & Security
We utilize a sophisticated DOM (Document Object Model) parser that builds a virtual tree of your XML structure. It then re-renders that tree into a clean, text-based output using customizable indentation rules, ensuring that your data remains syntactically correct and perfectly formatted.
Under the Hood: the Xml Formatter explained properly
No marketing filler — just the mechanics, the trade-offs and the real limits, explained clearly.
How it actually works
Input is parsed by the browser's DOMParser in text/xml mode and checked for the parser-error node it inserts when a document is malformed, so an unclosed tag or a stray ampersand is caught before anything is written. A valid tree is then walked node by node and re-emitted with the indentation you choose: 2, 4 or 6 spaces, or a tab character, with a minify mode that produces one unbroken line.
Comments and CDATA sections are carried through rather than discarded, elements with no children become self-closing tags, and a node marked xml:space=preserve keeps its inner spacing exactly instead of being tidied. Text that mixed markup and characters stays on one line so the rendered content does not change.
What that means for your results
Because the output comes from the parsed tree rather than from regex guesswork, the document is guaranteed to reparse as the same structure you pasted. Escaping is rebuilt from the actual character data, which fixes the common hand-edited file where an ampersand in a title silently invalidates the whole feed.
Insignificant whitespace between elements is what a formatter exists to normalise, so the result is not a byte-for-byte copy of the input - it is the same document, easier to read.
Where it falls short — honestly
Whitespace inside text nodes without xml:space is trimmed, so a document whose meaning depends on padding between tags will change appearance. Namespace declarations are kept as they are found, but nothing here validates whether the document conforms to an XSD, a DTD or a feed specification.
Entities other than the five XML built-ins need a DTD to resolve, and the browser parser will refuse a document that references an external one.
A real end-to-end workflow
Paste the single-line XML a service returned, format it, and the structure becomes visible enough to debug: which element repeats, where a namespace prefix sits, which branch is empty. Auto-copy, when switched on, puts the formatted result on the clipboard as soon as it is produced, which removes a step when you are reformatting a stack of files.
To turn the structure into data instead, use XML to JSON; to build XML from data you already have, start from JSON to XML. Indenting a sitemap or an RSS feed before upload makes broken tags obvious in seconds.
