The conversion factors

Every unit is expressed as a multiple of the metre (the base), then divided by the target unit’s value. Key factors:

  • Metre = 1 - the SI base unit of length
  • Inch = exactly 0.0254 m   ·   Foot = 12 in = 0.3048 m   ·   Yard = 3 ft = 0.9144 m
  • Mile = 5,280 ft = exactly 1,609.344 m
  • Nautical mile = exactly 1,852 m (international)
  • Millimetre 0.001 · centimetre 0.01 · kilometre 1,000 · micrometre 1e⁼ · nanometre 1e⁻ (SI prefixes, exact)

Worked example: 1 mile = 1,609.344 m ÷ 1,000 = 1.609344 km. 1 inch = 0.0254 m = exactly 2.54 cm.

Why the imperial figures are exact

Since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, the yard and pound are defined by fixing 1 inch = exactly 0.0254 m, which makes the foot, yard and mile exact decimal multiples of the metre too. The metre itself has been defined since 1983 by the distance light travels in vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second, and the international nautical mile is fixed at exactly 1,852 m. So none of these conversions is an approximation.

About the Length Converter Tool

Convert between meters, feet, miles, and more with the ToolFlic Length Converter. This tool is essential for anyone working in construction, design, or international travel, providing a fast and reliable way to translate any length or distance between all major measurement units.

Core Advantages

Ensure your projects are perfectly sized, no matter which unit system you are using. Our converter handles everything from nanometers and millimeters up to miles and nautical miles, providing precise results for everyday tasks and engineering alike.

Architecture & Security

We use a high-precision floating-point engine to ensure that your conversions are accurate to multiple decimal places. Everything is handled client-side, giving you instant results without any network latency or data collections.

Under the Hood: the Length Converter explained properly

No marketing filler - just the mechanics, the trade-offs and the real limits, explained clearly.

How it actually works

Every length unit is defined by its size in metres, the base, so a conversion is a multiply into metres and a divide out; the list runs from nanometres and micrometres through millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres to inches, feet, yards, miles and nautical miles, with a filter for metric, imperial and other units.

What that means for your results

The factors are the exact international definitions - an inch is 0.0254 metres, a nautical mile is 1852 metres - so results stay consistent, and a quick-reference block repeats the everyday inch, foot, yard and mile values.

Where it falls short - honestly

It converts length only: there is no area, volume or speed, so a room or a parcel needs its dimensions multiplied elsewhere, and it computes in floating point, so extreme values can carry rounding. Exotic units beyond the list are absent.

A real end-to-end workflow

Convert each dimension separately and multiply afterwards for area, anchor on the exact inch-to-centimetre value when ordering or cutting, and use Weight Converter or Temperature Converter for the other systems and Unit Converter for broader categories.
